Sask. flax cookies now being sold at Shanghai Disney

China has turned into the region’s biggest purchaser of flax, more than the European Union or United States. While most flax is used for industrial use, such as in paint, or for animal feed, SaskFlax executive director Wayne Thompson is encouraged that a greater amount of the product is making it to store shelves.
“Seeing flax from Saskatchewan being included in cookies that are being sold at Shanghai Disney, that is the direction we’re really wanting to see flax go in the Chinese market,” Thompson said.
Premier Brad Wall is glad that Saskatchewan flax is being used in cookies at Shanghai Disney Resort. Meanwhile, Saskatchewan farming groups are cheering the news.
“It’s a positive thing for Saskatchewan flax,” said SaskFlax executive director Wayne Thompson. “Seeing flax being used in the consumer market in China has been one of our goals.”
Wall is on a 11-day trade mission to China and South Korea. The trip was intended to champion the province’s agricultural products, and additionally fuel and fertilizer.
According to SaskFlax, 80 per cent of flax grown on the prairies is from Saskatchewan. Wall is expected back in the province later this week.
