Contaminated Baby Food Puts Lives at Risk

Loblaw Companies Ltd has had to recall certain baby food pouches due to a possible contamination by butolism.

 

What is botulism?

It is a toxin caused by Clostridium botulinum. There are different forms of botulinum; food-borne, wound and infant botulism.

The Canadian version of America’s FDA, the CFIA said that the pouches encourage the growth of the toxin that can form in the food.

The food that was recalled were sold nationwide.

 

While the issue relates to a very small subset of products no longer available for sale, in the interest of customer trust, President’s Choice welcomes anyone with uncertainty about this product to return it for a full refund. To date, there have been no confirmed illnesses associated with this recall.”

 

On the other hand, the CFIA has said that there have been reported cases might be connected to the consumption of these products and urge everyone to go to the hospital.

Does bank on your nose telling if the food is safe your little baby. According to the agency, the food does not have the appearance of mold and bad smell.

 

What to look out for?

Dizziness, fatigue, vomiting, dry mouth, double vision, respiratory failure, paralysis, to name a few. Even if your baby is not showing any symptoms take him/her to the doctor; better safe than sorry.

What exactly caused this contamination?

The company said that there was a manufacturing mistake in which too water was used in making the baby food creating a breeding groung for the toxin.

“Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased,” the CFIA said.

The food was sold in the following stores:

  • Atlantic Canada: Atlantic Superstore, Dominion, Cash&Carry, Real Canadian Wholesale Club, Your Independent Grocer, Shoppers Drug Mart and affiliated independent stores.
  • Ontario: Fortinos, Loblaws, No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Real Canadian Wholesale Club, Valu-mart, Your Independent Grocer, Zehrs, Shoppers Drug Mart and affiliated independent stores.
  • Quebec: Club entrepôt, Maxi, Maxi & Cie, Presto, Provigo, Provigo le Marché, AXEP, Pharmaprix and Intermarché
  • Western Canada: Extra Foods, Loblaws City Market, No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Real Canadian Wholesale Club, Your Independent Grocer, Shoppers Drug Mart and affiliated independent stores.

The recall of their products has forced the company to extend the recall to all flavours of the PC Organics strained baby food pouches and they are as follows:

  • PC Organics Apple, Blueberry & Green Pea strained baby food, 128 ml.
  • PC Organics Apple Crisp Muffin flavour puree snack, 128 ml.
  • PC Organics Apple, Carrot, Apricot & Millet strained baby Food, 128 ml.
  • PC Organics Banana, Sweet Potato & Blueberry strained baby food, 128 ml.
  • PC Organics Apple strained baby food, 128 ml.
  • PC Organics Apple, Banana & Blueberry with Yogurt strained baby food, 128 ml.
  • PC Organics Apple, Banana & Strawberry with Yogurt strained baby food , 128 ml.
  • PC Organics Apple Cherry strained baby food, 128 ml.
  • PC Organics Sweet Potato, Apple and Mango strained baby food, 128 ml.
  • PC Organics Peach Maple Cobbler Flavour puree snack, 128 ml.
