Getting less chicken than you paid for?
New results from Marketplace investigation on 5 leading fast food restaurants will come as a shock for many Canadians that prefer going in for chicken sandwiches in restaurants. According to the test results of the poultry used in several well known grilled chicken sandwiches served in restaurants shows that customers are paying for more than they are biting. It was discovered that there is only about half chicken found in food stuffs that the whole portion.
Mahood, a local customer of Subway takes chicken sandwiches as a daily lunchtime snack was very shocked at the test results and felt cheated. To him, the message relayed by food companies make things look like “you are taking it straight from a farm and it’s just a fresh piece of meat.” According to DNA Laboratory, a perfect chicken meal should come in at 100% chicken DNA but the entire food preparation process do not allow this to happen as the food value deteriorates.
The Peterborough, Ontario-based team carried out a test on meat, without sauces and in the first round of tests, and the results showed that most of the scores were almost 100% chicken DNA. This result came as abnormal for the team which made them to run the test again on five new ovens roasted chicken pieces and also five new chicken strips. This time the results show that the roasted chicken scored 53.6% chicken DNA while the chicken strips had just 42.8% of chicken DNA.
In response to these results, Subway was not pleased at all and did not agree with the test results. They went on to state that “our recipe calls for 1% or less of soy protein in our chicken products.”
In addition, Subway stated they will take into consideration the quality of chicken they order form their suppliers.
