New Bitcoin Scam Aims Self-Conscious Porn Viewers
In an effort to blackmail victims and extract $1,900, a new scam has started aiming porn viewers and they only accept bitcoin.
Through malware, the fraudsters claim to have conceding recording of viewers taken from the would-be victim’s webcam while they are watching porn videos. The scam email sent to victim’s starts by disclosing to them their own password as “proof” that their computer has been hacked, even though it is uncertain if the recording is real.
The scam email claims that an RDP (remote control desktop program) has been installed on the victim’s computer making it possible for the fraudster to secretly access and record video footage in addition to accessing the victim’s entire contact information, blacking them that the video will be sent to their contact list.
Yet, the email is unclear and does not have the name of any particular porn sites. The email also offers to show “proof” by sending the recording to nine contacts with the intention of embarrassing the victim’s, it is possible that the scam is a bluff.
The scam email goes further to state that $1,900 is the price for the silence, giving a BTC address. Even though bitcoin is more traceable compared to cash, the pseudonymous nature of bitcoin and the simplicity at which it can be moved into a private currency such as zcash or monero and then laundered makes it a more easier method on online scam as opposed to accepting a wire transfer or PayPal payment. But fraudsters also make use of other fiat currency methods such as transferring fiat into gift card payments from e-commerce marketplace.
