Choosing A Business Name

Naming a business might sound easy but it is, in fact, stressful as it requires a lot of consideration. The name of your business should not only be limited to the starting phase of the business, it should work both for now and the future. The business name should embody both your values and your company’s distinguishing characteristics. Since it is a very important decision you will have to make, we have come up with some tips to help you pick the right name.

#1. Make it simple

Avoid using hyphens and other special characters as this might make it look complicated for certain customers. in fact, the shorter the better. Your business name should be easy to pronounce if possible, limit it to two or three syllables. However bear in mind that simple doesn’t mean cliché.

Don’t try to stay safe by picking names that are similar to that of your competitors. That will make you look like a copycat. Get creative and think outside the box. Every company wants a name that stands out from the crowd, a catchy handle that will remain fresh and memorable over time, so put some effort in this. Differentiation is required to stand out from competitors.

#3. Don’t limit yourself

Just because you started in a particular place or with a single product doesn’t mean you should limit your company name to it. Avoid adding geographic or product category to your name. Otherwise, if your business expands you might just confuse customers. Don’t box yourself in. When picking a name always think about the future.

There is a high tendency that if your customers cannot pronounce your business name then they won’t remember it. Make your business name one that customers can pronounce and remember easily. Choose to be simple, straightforward and unique.

#5. Make some sense

Most times, when trying to be unique, business owners come up with names that don’t make sense at all.  In as much as they can stand out, they are also a big risk. Always check the international implications. Companys have been embarrassed by a new name that had negative and even obscene connotations in another language. Research cannot be ignored when picking a name

#6. Give a clue

Some experts say a perfect business name is one that that will give a clue about what the business is about at the mention of the name. You are free to choose any business name you desire but for the best interest of the business, the name should remind customers and match what you do.

Choosing a business might be taken for granted by some people but it should not be so because it is a very delicate issue. Remember your name should be simple, and straightforward yet catchy and outstanding. Nothing speaks louder about you business than it’s name.
