Microsoft seeks trump order exemption for workers with visas.

Microsoft, one of the tech companies to express opposition to President Trump’s executive order on immigration, is asking officials to grant exceptions for law-abiding, visa-holding workers and students.

Microsoft filed the formal request in a letter sent by company president and chief legal Brad Smith to Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, to grant exceptions on a case by case basis that will permit “Responsible Known Travelers with Pressing Needs.”

The proposal argues that the secretaries have the power to grant exceptions to the travel ban under the order issued last week by President Trump.

Technology companies including Microsoft, Google proprietor Alphabet Inc., Apple Inc. and, Amazon.com Inc. have been vocal in their opposition to Trump’s order, contending that they depend on workers from around the globe to make their products and services.

Microsoft said that 76 employees and their 41 dependents were impacted by the executive order.

Microsoft’s proposition would cover holders of the H-1B visa, a temporary work visa that the tech part depends on to enroll outside talent. Secretary Kelly issued a request on Sunday saying that green card holders would be permitted to go under the official orders, however H-1B holders from the seven influenced nations are still restricted.
