Freedom of the Press Foundation Currently Receives Cryptocurrency Donations
Cryptocurrencies are increasing their usage as they are currently being used to pay for college and university tuition fees, buy Lamborghini, and pay for space travel. Additionally, you can now also help journalists and whistle-blowers by making donations to the Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) using bitcoin, ethereum, bitcoin cash, litecoin, and zcash.
The donations will sponsor present projects of the free speech charity such as SecureDrop, a whistle-blower platform that makes it possible for journalists to receive messages and documents from unknown sources.
Other projects that the FPF is presently undertaking include the US Press Freedom Tracker, a site which targets counting and documenting press freedom violations that occur in the United States. FPF also makes donations to Signal, the encrypted phone call, and text message app.
The San Francisco, California-based free speech organization has already received a donation of 1,000 ETH from Mainframe, a firm in the blockchain space which is creating a censorship-resistant communication and decentralized applications network.
After the donation, FPF wrote on its website that: “We are deeply grateful Mainframe has made this critical donation to help Freedom of the Press Foundation protect journalists and whistle-blowers, and are excited Mainframe, through their technology, shares our commitment to protecting privacy and freedom online.”
Earlier, Mainframe had received about $1.4 million in a campaign called “Proof of Heart”.
To be precise, FPF, which was established six years ago and considers whistle-blower and ex-National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden as a board member, had for a while been receiving bitcoin donations through online payments processor Stripe.
Yet, Stripe, earlier this year stopped bitcoin donation mentioning high fees and an increased transaction failure rate as some of the reasons which have made it hard for FPF to keep on receiving bitcoin donations, presently, the charity will receive cryptocurrency donations directly from digital wallets.
