How Letting Employees Work From Home Can Harm Your Company

It is understandable if you get anxious if an employee chooses to work at home for the day because you there are so many things they could do besides work. Slacking off isn’t the only thing to fear when it comes to letting employees work from home. Apart from getting work done or not there other ways your company is affected when you let employees work from home.

However, there are exceptions, of course. If you have a really valuable employee, they can work remotely from home or as they travel. Meetings can still be conducted via Skype, despite the time difference. When your employee returns, their transition from remote to in-office will be seamless because they are still be involved in the company culture.

A strong workplace is one of an organization’s most important competitive advantages. Enthusiastic employees are needed to delight your customers and to build great products and if the majority of your workforce works remotely, the ability to build that culture will be lost.

If a culture of offsite work takes hold, employees that crave the social aspect of a work place suffer because the work place becomes unpredictable restricting the practice of working at home will boost innovation and morale, the employees have to be together in a central location.

Remote workers report problems with co-workers as a result of remote arrangement. Communication, solving problems and casual collision with co-workers becomes easier and cannot be done via e-mail. Your company culture will be lower if there are a lot of remote workers, compared to companies with non-remote workers.

Do not get anxious over employees working from home, they actually do their work if they don’t come into the office. The problem is that it erodes company culture but make an exception for employees to work remotely necessary, whether they are sick or have a sick child to take care of. In other instances though, your priority should be a tight knit company culture.
