Commodities Produced by Child Laborers Making their Way into Canada

A recent report released information suggesting that Canadians could be unknowingly buying billions in dollars of commodities manufactured by child laborers in other parts of the world.

The report implies that imports of supposed risky goods into Canada summed up to $34 billion last year, an increase from $26 billion in 2012.

That is rise in 31 per cent, which is said to be an alert to the consumers and politicians all the same.

The released data shows an increase in tomato imports from Mexico, garments imports from Bangladesh and footwear from India as an opportunity for buyers to verify where the goods are made.

The report reiterates an appeal for government to pass new legislations so as to pressurize companies to declare their supply origin and confirm their products are not made by child or force laborers.

The report also suggests companies to anticipatorily make the information public.
