Airbnb coming to the aid of refuges singled out by Trump travel ban
On Friday, US President Donald Trump endorsed a decree that prevents all refuges into the United States for 120 days in addition to more measures to be put in place to have tougher screening process to weed out “radical Islamic terrorists.”
Refuges from Syria won’t gain entry to the country until further notice, whereas refuges from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen are on a 90 day ban. Furthermore, Christian refuges have been given more advantage over refugees from other religions.
In the wake of this announcement, Brian Chesky, the co-founder and CEO of Airbnb took to twitter to extend his aid to travelers from several Muslim-majority countries by providing them with free shelter. He described the ban as uncalled for and that is not a just decision taken by the president to single out countries.
He went on to add that Airbnb and other concerned people should unite with the people that are not allowed in the United States.
The home-sharing site said it will continue to support people that the U.S President Donald Trump’s ban affects with Joe Gebbia who is also a co-founder of Airbnb declaring his support to refuges affected by the ban. He also urges people to come to the aid of these refugees.
The site which was established in 2008 operates in 50,000 cities in 191 countries as is now a $30 billion firm.
According to an Airbnb spokesman, it is yet to be disclosed the amount of refugees that the Airbnb housing would cater for and also how refugees will be selected. But one thing that is for sure is that the company will do all it can to aid refugees.
