Major League Baseball Takes A Step Further Into Blockchain

Major League Baseball (MLB) is going further into the blockchain and crypto space as it will be launching its own Ethereum-based game, “MLB Crypto,” in association with blockchain dApp creator Lucid Sight, according to Yahoo Finance.

Although the official website of MLB Crypto is now live, the game remains to be launched. Users will have access to their ether to purchase digital MLB collectibles, play games to level up, or get different rewards. Comparable to CryptoKitties, these collectibles could also be sold through the Ethereum blockchain to other crypto users. Notably, MLB was in dialogue with Lucid Sights when CryptoKitties was launched in November last year. Kenny Gersh, Executive Vice President of Gaming and New Business Ventures at MLB, noted that the game showed that MLB Crypto would be effective in “delivering baseball” to users with the help of blockchain technology.

Gersh noted that they are not stepping into the blockchain and crypto space as a result of its popularity. Since MLB’s user attendance has gradually declined this season, they simply want to develop a way to engage and bring back baseball fans.

For MLB Crypto to be successful in this, it needs to give users access to collect products that celebrate and commemorate MLB events. “For me, say the Red Sox win the division in a couple months, I want to buy something that symbolizes that. These will be event-based things — those moments in sports that happen that you want to remember and cherish, and have a sense that you were there, even if only digitally,” said Gersh.

Gersh went on to add that some people may allege that they use a “get-rich-quick scheme,” but they need to understand that the MLB is simply moving their present collectibles to the digital world.

Yet, this game might look confusing to people who have not idea about the Ethereum Blockchain. Octavio Herrera, co-founder of Lucid Sight stated that they will create a simple mobile app to fight this issue. Yet, it won’t be launched until after MLB Crypto is launched.

The first 100 users that sign up to MLB Crypto will receive one MLB collectible free of charge.
